Four years ago, we decided you deserve to know,
the public deserves to know how the authorities in Israel handle animals.
For example: how many animals are killed?
How many of them are hunted for sport?
And how many offenders that abused animals actually pay for it?
Since then, every year we publish the one document that collects all the data regarding how the
state authorities in Israel handle animals.
The report can be found on our website
just google "the animal status report".
The report is based on hundreds of freedom of information requests that we send to local
authorities and government ministries.
We recently published the 2024-2025 report,
and sadly the same grim image repeats itself.
So what did we have?
Killing stray dogs
Its allowed to kill dogs in Israel,
in municipal pounds, live shooting and poison darts.
In 2024 at least 1006 dogs were shot with poison arrows,
The nature and parks authority personnel shot 792 dogs,
compared with 586 dogs the year before.
Unfortunately, many authorities did not provide us with the data on killing at their municipal pounds,
and court proceedings are taking place.
Hunting and wildlife
Wild boards, hares, jackals, wolves and other wildlife are being legally hunted every day.
In 20204 more than 140,000 animals were hunted.
In 2024 permitted experiments were performed on approximately 340,000 animals.
Around 90% on animals that were used for experiments were killed after the experiment.
Farmed animals
What supervision are there on the conditions in which cows, chickens, sheep and fish are kept?
In 2024 only 5 inspection on dairy farms were performed.
Only 3 inspections were performed in cattle farm during 2024
and only 28 wellbeing inspections were done in chickens' coops.
No inspections were performed on herds of cattle and sheep.
None on fish farms.
In other words, inspection is very scarce.
Enforcement
What punishment, if any, is given to abusers?
in 2024 only 5 administrative fines were given per the animal protection law,
and only 2 indictments were made by the Ministry of Agriculture.
In 2024 the war was an excuse to lighten the conditions to the killing of stray dogs in the Gaza
Envelope, and in 2025 the veterinary services and the Ministry of Agriculture completed the protocol for the using of posion, including P.A.P.P bites. The original claim was that the poison will be used to deal with the difficult situation in the Gaza Envelope but in actuality there is no
geographic limit in the protocol.
Let the Animals Live has filed a motion to the Supreme Court to ban the use of poison, and the proceedings are currently taking place.
We invite you to read the report, share, and keep letting us know of any wrongdoings against animals.
