Today we were invited by MK Yasmin Sacks Fridman to the Knesset’s education committee to discuss the issue of wild boars in the Haifa area.
The mass shooting of wild boars and other wildlife is unacceptable.
When you look at the numbers, it’s clear the authorities are trigger-happy.
What the city of Haifa does in association with the Nature and Parks Authority is one very extreme example of the phenomenon. We have tried to get answers from the Nature and Parks Authority – how do you make sure the city of Haifa does everything in its power to avoid killing, as indicated by law?
We received no answers.
Thankfully, the committee chairperson was not confused and has instructed the Nature and Parks Authority and the city of Haifa to produce up-to-date data on their handling of wild boars and on their decision making.
The committee implored the city of Haifa to find alternatives to killing, and emphasized the ruling of the Supreme Court which states that killing animals must always be a last resort.
This isn’t just a legal order, but a moral one, first and foremost.
Chairperson MK Yossi Taieb: “the committee expresses its malcontent of the shooting of wild boars. The committee demands the city finds alternatives to shooting roaming boars. Shooting must be the very last resort.”
