Yesterday we attended a debate at the Knesset, led by MK Sharren Haskel regarding the holding condition of pigs in farms, and specifically the regulations that still permit the mutilation of piglets without anesthesia and the holding of nursing mothers after giving birth in cages so small they are unable to move at all for weeks!
In order to ban these ban these practices – such as cutting off piglets’ tails and teeth without anesthesia to avoid mutual tail biting which is a result of boredom and stress – all that needs to be done is to demand meeting the standards that are already defined in the 2015 Animal Protection regulations, following our petition to the Supreme Court, and supply the hundreds of thousands of pigs slaughtered in Israel every year with space, air, and enriching their environment to fulfill their natural curiosity.
Instead of protecting the animals, the Ministry of Agriculture protects the abusive breeders who break the law, does not enforce the animal protection regulations, and refuses to ban the practices of mutilation and restraining cages.
We wish to thank Knesset Members Sharren Haskel שרן השכלl and יסמין סאקס פרידמן – Yasmin Sacks Fridman for speaking up for the animals and for the important work they do.
